Environmental Stewardship

Environmental issues for Taylor Wimpey can be broken down into two main areas – those associated with design and use of our developments, and those associated with the construction phase of a development. The former are discussed in more detail in the Sustainable development section .

During construction there are many environmental issues to be managed.

Waste
Waste is one of the most important issues and over the last few years our homebuilding business in the UK has been successful in reducing waste. This has been achieved through a concerted effort by all parties in the construction process to manage waste in an effective manner.

Plasterboard is one of the largest waste streams. We work with our supply chain partner to operate a waste segregation and recycling scheme for waste plasterboard. This has been extremely successful and in 2007 we achieved a segregation rate for waste plasterboard of 1.05 tonnes per housing unit of plasterboard segregated and returned for recycling.

Nuisance and pollution
We employ environmental management plans on all of our projects to assist us with managing the risk of nuisance, for example noise and dust, and the risk of pollution, such as silt or fuel entering rivers, streams and ponds. We have a good track record in terms of preventing environmental incidents and we have very few significant incidents.

Protecting wildlife
Any biodiversity/wildlife protection issues are discussed with the planning authorities and relevant wildlife groups and incorporated into our environmental plans. Protected trees are retained and fenced off from the construction work. Bats may be relocated or alternative roosts provided. Newt fences may be erected to divert newts away from the construction activities, and we avoid interfering with nesting birds.

Our project teams monitor implementation of environmental protection measures through daily checks and weekly site inspections. Our in-house environmental specialists also carry out audits and inspections, and project teams may call upon them at any time for guidance.
