Prior to the submission of a planning application in July 2002, Taylor Woodrow undertook an extensive six month programme of public consultation. This was designed to ensure that the people of Swindon were aware of the constraints influencing the development of the Southern Development Area and to provide the opportunity for the community to put forward their thoughts and ideas. A stakeholder workshop, chaired by an independent facilitator, was also held to give local interest groups and organisations the opportunity to work with members of the SDA professional team on key issues influencing the creation of a masterplan.
Following the submission of the outline planning application responsibility for the public consultation was passed to Swindon Borough Council, which held a number of exhibitions and discussion forums. A result of which saw Taylor Woodrowmake a number of key amendments to the masterplan which was approved by the Community Group prior to the submission of the application. This project has been commended by the office of the Deputy Prime Minister as an example of best practice in community consultation.
